Do You Like My Velour Shirt?

It makes me dance better.

Navy blue velour shirt

In middle school, I wore a long-sleeve V-neck navy velour shirt to the fall dance.  I was living in Montreal; so I get a partial pass on the long sleeves. It was fall.
But velour??
Back then, I thought it looked great.  I’m not sure it ever looked great, but I thought it did.
And while it may have helped my confidence at the dance, if memory serves, it didn’t do much for my success at the dance.

Today, I wouldn’t wear that velour shirt.
Times have changed, and my taste in shirts has changed. Thankfully.

But what about my taste in me?
It’s funny. Society changes. Relationships change. Work changes.  And yet we tend to stick with the same me.
That’s not too surprising; I kinda like me.  Being me is comfortable.  Sort of like that navy velour shirt back in grade eight.

So how do I know when I’ve outgrown me?  How do I know when I need to change me?
Something tells me I can’t always rely on me to know that.
I can definitely look at my grade-eight navy velour shirt and know 100%, “No, that’s not great for me.”
But when I look in the mirror, I don’t always know, “This is the time to change me.”

Maybe that’s why 360-feedback and robust personality assessments can be so valuable.
They can help us know when we need to change the velour in our lives.
They can help us update our leadership wardrobe.
If you’ve never had the opportunity to experience either one, maybe now’s the time.
We can all use a good makeover from time to time.
