Who Are You Really Talking To?

Sometimes the real leadership challenge is closer than you think.

Two Faces Illusion

Here’s a question worth considering:
When I’m dreaming and talking to another person, who am I actually talking to?
If it’s my dream, I’m the one creating it.  So even though it seems like I’m talking to somebody else, I’m also talking to myself. That’s weird—because in the dream, the “other” seems completely distinct from me.

And that’s a useful leadership metaphor.

Leaders often experience conflict, resistance, or misunderstanding as if it lives entirely in others:
They’re difficult.
They’re checked out.
They don’t get it.
They’re the problem.

Sometimes that’s true. But sometimes what we’re seeing is a reflection of our own behavior.

Perhaps the team is not resistant—maybe the direction we’re providing is unclear.
Perhaps people are not disengaged—maybe they don’t feel invited in.
Perhaps the problem is not simply out there—maybe it’s also being shaped by our assumptions, tone, or presence.

Strong leaders don’t stop at judging the moment. They examine their role in creating it.
Clear-eyed leaders don’t always look to the “other” for answers.  The first person a leader must learn to lead is the one in the mirror.
