Now Is Not the Time to Play to Your Strengths.

Rise to the challenge.

Overdoing your strengths

There’s a very seductive quality to wanting to play to your strengths.
Many books, blogs, articles, talks, videos, and self-professed gurus have encouraged you to do so.
But don’t fall for that.  It’s too risky.  And too costly.

When you were a child, did you play to your strengths, or instead did others encourage you to do things you hadn’t done before?
When you were in school, did you play to your strengths, or instead did others encourage you to learn things you never knew before?
So why stop now?

The assumption behind the recommendation to play to your strengths is that your strengths will remain relevant.
Are you willing to make that bet?
Pre-COVID, what strengths came in handy?  And during COVID?  And now?

Many leaders will tell you that COVID has been the challenge of their career
So did COVID decide to accommodate them, and ensure it played to their strengths?

So if you believe the world, your country, your industry, your company, your team, and your role will remain static, by all means, play to your strengths.

But if you believe they may change and you’ll need to stay relevant, then identify where you’re vulnerable…and fix that.
